Dragon to Roar Across London’s Trafalgar Square in Landmark 'One & Other' Art Project
Participant to capture art history in the making using Nuance speech recognition software Dragon NaturallySpeaking
London, UK, 22 June, 2009 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) has today announced that this summer, its best selling desktop speech recognition software Dragon® NaturallySpeaking®, is to feature in a ground-breaking art project called One & Other. The brainchild of renowned sculptor Antony Gormley, One & Other invites qualifying citizens to occupy the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London, every hour for 100 days. From there, they can conduct activities ranging from singing, painting, reading aloud, reciting poetry, dancing, playing an instrument or even remaining silent and still. One & Other starts on 6 July and will run until 14 October. Over 2,000 citizens are expected to participate.
Built in 1841, the Fourth Plinth is the plinth located in the north-west corner of Trafalgar Square. Empty for many years, it is now used to display temporary works of art commissioned from leading national and international artists. One person chosen to occupy the Fourth Plinth, is Jane Scaysbrook, an Independent Education Assessor based in Hertfordshire. Jane will take to the Plinth on Wednesday July 15. During her moment of fame surrounded by statues of venerable historic figures, Jane will spend an hour describing what she sees before and around her. To capture her comments and observations, Jane will dictate to her laptop - which features Nuance’s Dragon NaturallySpeaking – thus enabling her to capture and document the momentous occasion in real time by speaking instead of typing.
As a long term user of Dragon NaturallySpeaking, more typically Jane uses it to create Word documents and Excel spreadsheets, in order to produce dyslexia assessment reports on learners. The reports can be up to nine pages long, and Jane states that the time savings using the Nuance software are ‘considerable’.
